An introduction to brand photography with San Francisco-based photographer Hillary Jeanne.
As more businesses are elevating their online presence, leveraging the power of professional photography is becoming even more important. Professional photos offer a sure way to set yourself apart from your competitors. The right images will provide an authentic representation of your brand.
Everyone is familiar with the typical headshot, but personal branding photography is still somewhat of a new idea. To better understand what it’s all about, we sat down with San Francisco-based photographer (and friend), Hillary Jeanne, to discuss all things personal branding photography. Here’s what we found out:
Personal branding photography is strategic.
It’s not just about hiring a photographer to take some quick pics. Personal branding photography is strategic. It’s a way to stand out as a key player in your industry and connect with your ideal client on a more personal level. When deciding to invest in your brand photography, you want to keep your long-term strategy in mind. Hillary’s photography packages take into consideration both her client’s branding and marketing needs. Before she dives into a full-day shoot with her client, she sets up a 90-minute intensive where she explores her client’s ideal client profile, what makes her client’s brand unique, and any fears they may have about showing up for their business online. She refers to this as unpacking their “why.”
It’s all about personality.
Sure there are different types of branding photography. You have basic headshots, lifestyle portraits, product and service photos, but what makes personal branding photography unique is just that: it’s personal. It’s about showcasing your personality. No one can compete with YOU. Who are you? What inspires you? What makes you happy? These are all the things that come up with a personal branding session.
The “know, like, and trust” factor is very important.
“The number one reason to invest in personal branding photography is the know, like, and trust factor.” Personal branding photography is a great way to stand out in a saturated market. “It creates credibility and authority.”
You can use your images EVERYWHERE.
We could create a whole new blog post discussing all the places you can use your personal brand images. To keep things short this time around, here are some ideas: your website, landing pages, social media, newsletters, and bio profiles (especially for events).
It’s an investment (and a GOOD one)!
Hillary also mentioned that a common concern that comes up is the price. Many people separate their marketing budget from the amount they are willing to pay for high-quality images. Ideally, you should be thinking of professional photography as part of your marketing budget. It’s a business investment after all. Hillary’s clients are pretty consistent with their personal branding sessions, elevating their images at least once a year to keep up with the evolution of their businesses. If you’re thinking about investing in this type of photography, an ideal time to get started is during a rebrand or a new website launch.
